How to Organize Your Photo Library

Oh, the horrors of the photo library! It’s always an absolute mess!

Don’t worry too much; we’re all in the same position. With phone cameras being so easy and storage being so cheap, we’re all guilty of hoarding photos. When you need to find one picture, it’s like searching for a needle in a haystack.

How are you supposed to find what you’re looking for when they’re all mixed in together? With these tips, you’ll be able to save all your memories in one place and keep them organized forever.

Keep reading to find out how to take back control of your photo library.

Go Through Your Photo Library

Whether you choose to go through and keep all your good photos or remove all the bad ones is up to you. Either strategy will result in fewer photos overall, so you’ll be happy with the result.

Culling your bad photos (out of focus, test shots, and more) is probably the fastest way to reduce the chaos, but then you risk accidentally deleting an image you want to keep.

Some light photo editing can recover some bad photos, so keep that in mind when going through them. In 2021, almost 50% of Americans used photo editing software either on their phones or tablets.

Free alternatives are also available if you don’t feel like paying for a full photo editor like Adobe Lightroom.

Either way, we strongly suggest using the Recycle Bin on Windows or the Trash Can on Mac, just in case.

Get Your Photos Together

Don’t fall into the classic trap of duplicating your photo libraries. It’s straightforward to just dump all the photos from your phone onto your system photo library, but that doesn’t really solve your issue.

You should decide where you’re going to keep all your photos and either sync constantly (and remove them from your mobile device) or just keep things off your local storage completely.

If you want an automated way of doing this, the iCloud Photo Library (alongside Apple’s Photos app) or Google Photos library are very efficient and great for bringing everything together. You can, of course, do it all manually as well.

Resize and Reorganize

With megapixel counts constantly going up, everything is in extremely high resolution.

However, not everything needs to be pixel-perfect. If you’re not printing out large-format copies of your photos, consider resizing them to get back some control.

It’s relatively simple to find a photo resizer free online, and you can usually use them to resize an entire batch of photos in one go.

Keep the Momentum Going

The worst thing you can do after you’ve gone through all the effort of reorganizing is to go back to the old chaos.

Now that you know how to keep your photo library organized, ensure that every photo you take gets the same treatment. It can be daunting to tackle, but you’ll thank yourself later when it’s super easy to find what you’re looking for.
